2010 Infiniti G37 sports a sweet V-6

If the day ever comes when the sackcloth-and-ashes ethic has us scooting about in enclosed golf carts with lawn mower engines or electric motors, Nissan's V-6 will be among the most-mourned casualties of the aggressive downsizing underway in the industry.

Widely used by Nissan and its Infiniti luxury line, the engine is sheer driving delight. You could put the V-6, its displacement now boosted to 3.7 liters from 3.5, into a dilapidated Yugo (redundant?) and wind up with a car more delightful than disappointing.

With joy, we report that a junkyard Yugo is not this week's target. It is the revised, freshened, updated, tweaked — pick your industry jargon adjective — 2010 Infiniti G37 sedan.

While it doesn't represent Infiniti's latest thinking — the bigger M sedan, redesigned for 2011, does (and the 2011 will be featured in a future Test Drive) — the G hardly seems aged.

The spiffed-up G sedan and the sleeker two-door coupe went on sale in December. A convertible — sort of Infiniti's take on the Nissan 370Z sports car — hit the market in February. Limited-production anniversary editions, marking the brand's 40th year, are just arriving at dealers.

Changes for 2010 common to all the Gs: updated navigation system, instrument cluster, console, wood trim (now polished instead of matte). Specific to the G sedan: new schnoz and rump. The 3.7-liter V-6 went into the car in the 2009 model year. It's a sweet engine. Aurally: grumble morphing into growl, becoming a roar as your right foot gets heavier. Dynamically: ummm, nice, transforming into yippee and thence to holy mother of all that's good and pure, as your right sole hits the floor. Appealing at all speeds in all conditions. No need, as parents of yore said disparagingly, to "ram around" to enjoy. The boost to 3.7 liters brings horsepower up to 328 from 306 and adds an undetectable 1 pound-foot of torque, now 269. The change also boosts how fast you have to rev the engine to get those numbers. The seven-speed automatic mated to the 3.7 has more acceleration-oriented ratios in the lower gears, so responsiveness improves. And it has a more relaxed top gear for better highway mileage. Unfortunately, the seven-speed from time to time seemed a bit busy. Not hunting for the right gear. Rather, little motions and sensations giving the impression that lots of activity was occurring just to keep you at the desired speed in the desired gear. The vague busyness of the seven-speed was barely a bother, but the driving enthusiast drawn to the G in the first place would be the type to notice. Upshifts, especially under hard throttle, were swift, crisp and otherwise commendable. Downshifts, too. And the automatic will blip the throttle for you to make downshifts smooth, not jerky, just as you'd blip the gas driving a manual. Let's just decide right here, right now: Seven speeds is too many, and eight is silly. Six, well executed, is the Goldilocks/Baby Bear number: just right.

The test car, a G37x ("x" meaning all-wheel drive) with more option packages than you might want, showed that Infiniti hasn't compromised the snappy braking and crisp cornering that keep it among top-tier sports sedans. Steering was responsive but lacked perfect road feel. The AWD system was sure-footed in heavy rain and didn't seem to detract from the car's precise cornering, which AWD's extra weight and power split sometimes can do.

And that back seat is unsuitable for long-legged or robust riders. Put somebody back there to see, don't just eyeball it and guess. Subtle appeal: relative simplicity. No car really is simple nowadays, but G manages to avoid the type of needless complexity of BMW's iDrive and copy-cat multilayered control systems. You can operate most G features without a guide and interpreter.

Honorable mention for the automatic transmission's manual-shift mode. You want to stay in manual mode, yank the gearshift sideways, then tap forward or back to shift. You want to use manual only briefly — say in a tight corner when a downshift helps control the car — just finger-pull the steering-column shift paddle. Instant response. No need to move the gearshift lever first. After a few moments without using the paddles, the transmission reverts to conventional automatic operation. Will you prefer the G to, say, a BMW 3 Series or equivalent? Depends on your prejudices. But the G test car was immensely satisfying, a seeming no-brainer for buyers looking at that size and price range.

Remodel of Grubbs Infiniti Customer Lounge - Update

Remodel of Grubbs Infiniti Customer Lounge - Update
Even though we don't like our customers to be waiting around the dealership for too long when they are are here we want them to be as comfortable as they can be. This is why we are in the process of remodeling our customer lounge area (I won't call it a "waiting area" because personally I hate to wait. We already have Starbuck's coffee and WiFi... but will be adding a nice LCD TV for you to watch while you enjoy your time with us (see.. I didn't say "wait"). Good news.. as of April 22nd we have finished Phase 1 of the remodel and have moved the customer lounge from the showroom to the newly remodeled area.

Update on Texas Motor Speedway Races on Monday, April 19th

Hope you had a great weekend. At Grubbs Infiniti we had a great Saturday of meeting new customers and selling a few cars and experienced rain off and on. The weekend wasn't as good for NASCAR fans at the Texas Motor Speedway as the races were rained out. Even though it's not a 3 day weekend (well, at least not that I was aware of) the decision was made to race a double header on Monday, April 19th.

The decision to race a double header makes sense to me considering the amount of money that goes into the weekend of races and preparation in addition to the impact on the respective series standings. Missing a race in the series would make a major impact on points allocation etc.

Here is the official release regarding the rescheduled races for Monday, April 19th at the Texas Motor Speedway from the TMS Face Book page. You should become a fan of theirs while you are at it:

As baseball Hall of Famer Ernie Banks once said, “Let’s play two.”

Two days of persistent rain has left Texas Motor Speedway playing host today to a rare doubleheader featuring the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Samsung Mobile 500 at 11 a.m. CT followed by the Nationwide Series O’Reilly Auto Parts 300 at 4 p.m. CT.

This marks only the second time in NASCAR history that a doubleheader has been held on a Monday. The first time it occurred was Feb. 25, 2008, at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. Carl Edwards won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race and Tony Stewart won the Nationwide Series event.

The only time that Texas Motor Speedway was forced to run a NASCAR race on a Monday due to weather came in 2002. The Samsung/RadioShack 500 was scheduled to run on Sunday, April 7, but heavy rains forced a postponement until the next day. Matt Kenseth won that race by .888 of a second over Jeff Gordon.

Texas Motor Speedway nearly found itself staring at a doubleheader that weekend, barely getting in the O’Reilly 300 Nationwide Series race Saturday, April 6. Rain shortened the length of the race from 200 laps to 116 before it was called with the victory going to Jeff Purvis.

Today’s forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies with a high of 67 degrees and eight to 10 mile-per-hour winds from the northeast. The temperature for the 11 a.m. green flag for the Samsung Mobile 500 is expected to be 56 degrees.

Fans holding tickets for either race will be allowed to enjoy both events. Fans looking to purchase tickets for this unique NASCAR doubleheader can do so at the TMS ticket office, starting as low as $91.

For those requiring additional ticket information, please contact the TMS ticket office at (817) 215-8500.

The Samsung Mobile 500 will be televised live on FOX while the O’Reilly Auto Parts 300 will be live on ESPN2.

Top Speed Luxury Car Show - Dallas Auto Show Date Announced

This past weekend (April 10th from Noon - 4pm) I went out to the Top Speed Auto Luxury Car Show in Addison, TX to meet with DFW area luxury car enthusiasts and to show everyone the 2010 Infiniti G37S.

The weather was perfect for taking the top down and I was able to meet the owners of Top Speed and a number of participants in the auto show. Similar to other luxury auto shows; Nissan and Infiniti were well represented and there were also Lamborghinis, Mustangs and a handful of other modified cars. Top Speed provided drinks and Taquitos and Hooters of Addison made an appearance with some wings and two Hooters Girls to pass out coupons and add to the festivities. The high performance energy drink company, NOS (a spin on Nitrous Oxide), was in attendance as well and gave out lots of free samples. On a side note - I am actually drinking one right now and have noticed a remarkable increase in my words per minute while typing.

Grubbs Infiniti wanted to be a part of the Top Speed Auto Show because we wanted to show our commitment and support of local auto shows. Another reason why we wanted to participate in a local DFW auto show is that with missing the Dallas Auto Show and only attending the Ft. Worth Auto Show it's really important for local dealers such as Grubbs Infiniti to get out and see our customers and owners in environments outside the dealership. We have some great new models coming out and we decided that it made sense to bring out a 2010 Infiniti G37S Convertible for those in attendance to take a look at. We were not able to let anyone test drive the G37 Convertible at the meet up but you are more than welcome to come by the dealership and take one for a spin.

More Dallas Auto Show News....

Ward's Announces Auto Interior of the Year Awards For 2010

Ward's Announces Auto Interior of the Year Awards For 2010

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Ward's Auto Interior of the Year Awards, North America's only honors for excellence in automotive interiors, have been announced for 2010. The list features winners in pricing and vehicle type categories, as well as special award winners for design, versatility and brand expression.

The 2010 Ward's Auto Interior of the Year winners are:
  • Subaru Outback (Popular-priced car under $29,999)
  • Infiniti M56 (Premium-priced car)
  • Lexus HS 250h (Hybrid car)
  • Chevrolet Camaro (Sports car)
  • Chevrolet Equinox (Popular-priced truck under $39,999)
  • Volvo XC60 (Premium-priced truck)
  • Acura ZDX (Design Breakthrough)
  • Mazdaspeed3 (Brand Expression)
  • BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo (Design Versatility)
  • Porsche Panamera (Inspired Design)
"For years, the focus on safety and functionality has given us drab, uninspired vehicle interiors," said Ward's AutoWorldEditor-in-Chief Drew Winter. "This year's winners show style and original design is becoming as important inside the vehicle as it already is to the sheet metal outside."

A team of eight Ward's editors evaluated 40 vehicles that have either all-new or significantly upgraded interiors this year. The vehicles – both car and truck – were divided into segments, with one winner named in each category. In addition, Ward's bestowed special awards for outstanding achievements in key areas. Having both designations allowed judges to rank vehicles against the entire field, regardless of segment and price. Judging criteria included aesthetics and design harmony, comfort, driver information, ergonomics, fit and finish, materials, safety and overall value.

The awards will be presented during a ceremony held as part of the Ward's Auto Interiors Conference on May 19 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Dearborn, MI. Registration details can be found online at www.autointeriors.com.

4/10/10 – Top Speed Customer Appreciation & Luxury Car Meet – Addison, TX

One of the great things about working at Grubbs Infiniti is that you are surrounded by beautiful automobiles and are able to keep up with what's going on in the automotive industry. It's a great industry to be involved with but sometimes we need to take off our ties, take the top down and go for a drive to remember how much fun it is to just enjoy these luxury automobiles.
This weekend (April 10th from Noon - 4pm) we are going to take the opportunity to meet with other luxury car owners at a meet up at Top Speed in Addison. We decided that it made sense to bring out a 2010 Infiniti G37S Convertible for those in attendance to take a look at. It's a real beauty and I can't wait to drive it this weekend to the meet up. Grubbs Infiniti is now offering “Express Service”

Grubbs Infiniti is now offering “Express Service” as are other Infiniti dealerships across the nation. Customers can show up at Grubbs Infiniti, without an appointment, and have routine services performed on their vehicles in one hour or less. So swinging by the Grubbs Infiniti on your lunch break, or after work, to have service done is now a reality. The Infiniti Express Services include:
  • Oil & Filter Change
  • Air Filter Replacement
  • In-Cabin Microfilter Replacement
  • Wiper Blade Replacement
  • Tire Rotation
  • Battery Diagnostic Check & Replacement
  • Factory Scheduled Maintenance
Many dealerships are throwing in a free car wash, multi-point inspection and enhancing their waiting areas with Wi-Fi, cappuccino machines and massage chairs to make the 60 minute (or less) wait an enjoyable experience.

For Infiniti owners who have considered, or worse, actually gone to quickie service companies, this new service incentive should give pause for thought. Why sit on a cruddy chair in a stark waiting area filled with gas fumes and old copies of Motor Trend magazine when you can go direct to the dealer and be comfortable in the same amount of time? Beyond convenience, Infiniti service centers are sure to use only genuine Infiniti parts and factory trained technicians. Who knows where the parts come from quickie service companies and what the qualifications are of their technicians.

Grubbs Infiniti is delighted to offer this new and convenient level of service to their customers. Feel free to call or come by if you have any questions.

Video of iPad Being Installed in Toyota Tacoma

The newest product from Apple, the iPad, has been released and the innovative ways to put it to use are starting to be explored. One of these innovative ways to use an iPad is for in-dash movies / audio etc. Yes, it's been done and the video is on YouTube.

Similar to the iPhone the iPad is going to be used by application developers and entrepreneurs to create new and innovative uses for this new device. The concept of a tablet PC is not really new since tablet computers have been around in different forms over the years. However, with a fully functioning touch screen and with Apple building on the success for the iPhone there is no doubt that the iPad will spurn innovation in the computer industry and other industries.

A great example of this is someone customizing their Toyota Tacoma (not sure why they didn't choose an Infiniti) with an in-dash iPad. Wow... what a great idea for the person on the go. It would have been nice if the iPad was in more of a cradle vs being locked into the dashboard. If you are the kind of person that takes your faceplate off of your Alpine when you get out of the car I am not sure you would be too comfortable leaving the iPad in the dash. It would great to be able to take it out and use it as a fully functioning computer and then put back in the dash when driving (for charging, listening to streaming audio etc).

The comments from their blog were of course focused on how distracting the large display could be while driving and that it's not a 3G model making it somewhat useless unless you are sitting in your driveway. I am sure that since they already have it wired for the wifi iPad model that putting the 3G iPad in won't be too much of a problem for these guys. Plus they seem to know what they are doing.

Here is the video of the installation of an iPad in the dashboard of a Toyota Tacoma

The following is from a previous blog about driving and texting. I thought it was appropriate to place here with this video.

Today while driving to work at Grubbs Infiniti (yes, as the Social Media Manager I could easily work from home but prefer to office at the dealership so I stay connected to what's going on) I noticed a Clear Wireless billboard on Central Expressway that showed a lap top sitting on the dashboard of a person's car and showed a traffic camera on the screen. (I will get a picture of it tomorrow when I drive by it.. Yes, I will make sure to not be moving while I take the picture). My first impression was, that it's pretty cool to be tracking traffic live on your computer while driving. My second impression, after a cup of coffee, was that it's irresponsible to be even hinting at driving while using a lap top computer. That got me thinking about what the actual Texas laws are governing texting and hands free cell phone use.

The interesting thing about the laws that are in place is that you not only have to be tuned into what the Texas legislature passes as law (and signed by Governor Perry) but also what the municipalities around Texas have passed. Some municipalities have tried or have banned texting or using cellphones without a handsfree device all together. Dallas, Austin, Galveston and several smaller municipalities have banned use of drivers’ use of mobile phones without hands-free devices and text messaging in school zones. El Paso’s City Council voted March 9 to ban use of handheld cell phones and text messaging while driving in city limits. Hands-free cell phones OK. Fines up to $500. El Paso already has outlawed use of handheld cell phones in school zones.

Six states (Calif., Conn., N.J., N.Y., Ore. and Wash.), D.C. and the Virgin Islands already prohibit all drivers from using handheld cell phones while driving. While it's not inevitable that a handheld cell phone ban is in the works it might be time to take a look at purchasing a Bluetooth ear piece or upgrading your car with Bluetooth.

Navigation Screens a Distraction?
When I think about the Clear Wireless billboard with the laptop on the dashboard it also makes me think of how the onscreen navigation systems (whether, in dash or placed on your window) can be a possible distraction. Some navigation systems safeguard against use while moving and have a rolling lock out and you can't enter any information while moving at speeds more than 5mph. When using any device be it a handheld cell phone, handsfree cell phone or a navigation system it's important to make sure that you are operating your vehicle in a safe manner. The tragedies arising from texting while driving have been front and center in the news lately but you can point to any distraction while driving as a cause for concern.

I am sure that we have all seen someone eating or putting on makeup while driving and you just shook your head. Recently in Florida a women was involved in a crash because she was shaving her bikini line. (See Articles Below). Let's be responsible, buckle up and focus on driving. At Grubbs Infiniti we hope that driving an Infiniti is such a great experience that you want to focus 100% on the driving and not all the other stuff that you can do while driving.

Gas Savings Tips from Grubbs Infiniti

Maintenance Tips to Help You Save Gas

You can save money and energy, and wear and tear on your vehicle, with proper care and maintenance. Here are the items that most affect fuel economy. Plus, included are 6 money saving driving tips.
  • Motor Oil- Top off and change oil as necessary with manufacturer-recommended grade, "energy conserving" motor oils. Doing so can improve fuel economy by up to 2%. Replacing conventional oils with synthetics may offer even greater fuel economy benefits.
  • Air Filter- Make sure you change your air filter at the end of its recommended lifespan. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve a vehicle's gas mileage by up to 10%.
  • Engine Performance- Enhance fuel economy performance by having engines tuned and spark plugs replaced according to the manufacturer's recommended schedule. A single misfiring spark plug can cut fuel economy by up to 4%.
  • Brakes- Improperly maintained brakes can result in unwanted drag. This unnecessary resistance can have the same effect as driving with a foot on the brake pedal: A dramatic drop in fuel economy.
  • Warning Lights- Ignoring lights such as "Service Engine Soon" or "Check Engine" may result in poor fuel economy performance and require expensive repairs. Fuel economy could be compromised up to 40%.
  • Tire Wear- Replacing worn tires with a manufacturer recommended size and style can save hundreds of dollars per year. To improve fuel economy performance, consider low rolling-resistance replacement tires.
  • Tire Inflation- Keeping tires inflated to at least the manufacturer recommended pressure can improve fuel economy by up to 3%. Under inflated tires require more energy to roll, meaning more fill-ups.
  • Unnecessary Items in Trunk- Unnecessary weight lowers fuel economy; remove heavy items from your trunk and back seat.
  • Evaporative Emission Controls- Poorly operating evaporative emissions controls can fail to capture gasoline vapors and recycle them to the fuel tank. Faulty controls waste gas and degrade air quality.
  • Transmission- Properly operating modern transmissions and drive components are critical to vehicle fuel economy performance. Routinely check proper fluid levels and system operation.
All values are according to the U.S. EPA.

6 Green Driving Tips

  1. Avoid quick starts and aggressive driving- A smooth, steady speed saves gasoline and reduces wear and tear on the engine, tires, transmission and brakes
  2. Slow down- Fuel economy decreases about 1% for each mph over 55. Driving 65 mph vs. 75 mph, for example, increases fuel economy by about 10%.
  3. Use overdrive and cruise control- Overdrive gears slows engine speeds, saving gasoline and reducing wear. By helping to maintain a constant speed, cruise control reduces gasoline consumption.
  4. Combine trips when possible- Your engine runs more efficiently once it's warmed up, so avoid making multiple short trips. Stop and go driving also burns more gasoline. Avoid driving during rush hour whenever you can.
  5. Reduce drag- Remove roof racks and other items from your vehicle when you're not using them.
  6. Avoid unnecessary idling- In addition to contributing to engine wear and tear and air pollution, consider that when your vehicle is idling, you are getting 0 miles per gallon.

Grubbs Infiniti - Tech Corner
Bluetooth Phone Integration

Just the other day I had a friend post on Facebook that they can't figure out how to post replies to their friends on Facebook and they keep posting on their own wall instead of their friends. If you think of all of the technology that exists now a days with cell phones, iPods (now iPads as well), WiFi and other devices it's sometimes challenging to understand how it all works. We don't have all the answers but we want to try and point you in the right direction or maybe give you that one pointer or trick that enables you to get the most out of your Infiniti vehicle.

These are our first videos and we plan for them to get more sophisticated over time.

Bluetooth Phone and Bluetooth Audio Setup

One of the nicest things about the new Infiniti models is that most (check with your salesman for specific packages) come with some nice tech features such as Bluetooth "phone" and Bluetooth "audio".

What's the difference between "Bluetooth "Phone" and Bluetooth "Audio"? The difference is that with Bluetooth "Audio" you can listen to your Bluetooth enabled MP3 player (like an iPhone) wirelessly through your vehicles audio system.

I thought it was cool when I first got my Jeep Commander that it had an "AUX" jack for me to plug a cable into my iPod so I could listen through my car audio. This Bluetooth "Audio" integration is sure cool though.

I took a few minutes to try the pairing out for myself. Check out the videos for "How to Pair Your Bluetooth Phone" and "How to Pair Your Bluetooth Audio".

Please keep in mind our production costs are very low and Steven Spielberg wasn't available. But we do hope that these "How To" Videos help you with getting the most out of your Infiniti's Technical Features.

2011 Infiniti QX56 Video Review

The 2011 Infiniti QX56 made it's debut at the New York Auto Show this week and the reviews are starting to pour in. Cars.com, who always does great video review, took a look at the QX56 and did a review while at the show.

On a side note... there are good videos and bad videos that get posted to YouTube with car reviews and misc videos. This is one of the good ones as it's not just a slide show with some bad music in the background. Take a look and see if you agree.
